Foaling Out Your Mare

Foaling time can be one of the most anxious times that a mare
owner will ever  experience.  Let the Burleson Equine Hospital
relieve you of that stress by having your mare/s foaled-out by our
professional staff with 24 hour a day surveillance.  We now have
FOAL ALERT.  You will automatically receive a call when your mare starts
to deliver.

Foaling out Fee                                 $300.00

This fee includes assisted delivery if needed, five days of board,
enemas as needed, chlorohexadine naval treatment for five days and a
mare and foal general examination. Your mare will be bedded  in a clean
straw foaling stall. The average size mares will be in a 12   x 24 foot stall,
and the miniature mare will be in a 12 x 12 foot stall.   You will be called
as soon as possible after the mare foal
s.

             Plasma                                         $250.00 per liter

We strongly recommend that every foal receive one liter of plasma as
soon as possible after delivery.  A foal is born with no immunity due to the
type of placental attachment that foal has with the mare.   Foals  must
nurse the first milk (colostrum) within the first 12 to 18 hours
post-delivery or the foal may be immune-deficient.  If the mare leaks milk
prior to foaling, this foal may also be              immune-deficient.  Some
foals simply cannot absorb the large antibody molecule, and in other
cases, the mares do not transfer their antibodies to the colostrums.  In
either case, the foal will be immune-deficient.  Immune-deficient foals do
not survive the onslaught of germs to which they will be subjected
following birth.   Plasma prevents immune-deficiencies.

Foals that have a less than 800mg/dl antibody titer at the 24 hour post
nursing, whether or not plasma had been administered, should receive an
additional liter of plasma 3 weeks after the first liter.
